OF REGULAR SEASON (B & C Divisions)
RULE
CLARIFICATION: In 5
on 5 only, when the QB laterals the
ball, it nullifies the 5 yard rush rule. In the past, some refs have allowed
players who are not rushing (and who did not start 5 yards back) to cross
the line of scrimmage to chase a potential '2nd QB' (player who might receive
a lateral), while other refs have called that an illegal rush. For the sake
of simplicity and consistency, from now on, defensive players who did not
start 5 yards deep CANNOT cross the line of scrimmage until the ball is thrown,
pitched or handed-off. It will be considered an illegal rush (2 1/2 yards
and replay the down) if someone who did not start 5 yards deep crosses the
line of scrimmage before the ball leaves the QB's hands, even if they don't
chase the QB.
