NEWS FLASH: Panthers QB AJ Busch had one of the most spectacular seasons ever in the history of our league. He broke the record for 5 on 5 Passing Yards in a season and the record for Passing TDs in a season. He also led the league in defensive INTs. He was definitely the league's MVP of the regular season.

PLAYOFF Schedule UPDATED through June 30
(Regular Season Results through June 23)

8 ON 8 PLAYOFF NOTES
"Week 1 Weeknight Shockers & Thrillers": In one of the biggest shockers in league history, the #7 seed Nature Boyz upset the highly favored and last season's A division runner-up, #2 seed Platinum Hornets in the first round of the playoffs. The Nature Boyz scored on every one of their possessions and won the game 25 to 19 after they averted the Hornets last second effort to tie the game on an interception. In the 5 on 5 A division, the #6 Ravens upset the defending champions Big Air before losing to the Panthers in the Semi-Finals.
"Week 1 Saturday Thrillers": In a mild upset, Game Over beat the Troyouncers by a single point even though they started the game with 7 players (however, they did lose their second game). Also in the B division #7 seed 3 & Out upset the #2 seed Dragons in a high scoring close game. Blitzkrieg, Hasselhoffs and Back 2 Basics were the other 3 B division teams to advance and they all won their games by a touchdown. The Back 2 Basics/Couches game was one of the might exciting games of the day, although it had an unfortunate end, with both sides racking up numerous unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and the game had to be called with time still on the clock, due to a brawl (fortunately it was stopped very quickly) In the C division the #6 seed Bulldogs beat the #3 seed Mormonz in overtime. That overtime game, however, was heavily overshadowed by an incredible 5 ovetime game in the A division where #6 seed Roast Beef upset #3 seed Wolfpack. It was the second longest game in league history (the longest game dates all the way back to 1995, where a game went 6 overtimes). Also in the A division #1 seed Trouble won a thriller against #8 seed Q6. Even though the seeds would dictate that Trouble should have won the game, it still sort of felt like an upset since Q6 has been such a powerhouse for so long.
"Week 2 Crowning of the Champs": The first 3 A division games of the day were nothing short of spectacular, with the Tribe beating UV United 26 to 20, before losing to Trouble 19 to 14, while the Nature Boyz beat Roast Beef in OT (the 2nd straight OT game for Roast Beef). Both semi-finals games were classics. Tribe all but had the game locked up after coming back from a 13 to 0 defiicit to lead 14 to 13 with less than a minute to play, but Trouble's QB Sami Miller threw an absolute perfect bomb to shock Tribe and move on to the Championship. In the other semi-final, the Nature Boyz outlasted Roast Beef 25 to 19 in the OT game. The Championship was dominated by Trouble, as they beat the Nature Boyz 30 to 19. In the B division, Back 2 Basics proved the old philosophy that defense wins championships. They only allowed 6 points on the final day and only 12 points throughout the playoffs, beating Blitzkrieg and Hasselhoffs 25 to 6 and 19 to 0, respectively. All of the C division games on the final day were very close. The Pilgrims held on to beat Billy Thompson Tigers 19 to 14, while the Bulldogs came back from 13 points behind to win 14 to 13 against Shield zone in the semi-finals. Then in the Championship the Bulldogs beat the New Pilgrims (who had been the only unbeaten team in all formats and divisions prior to this game) 12 to 6 in double OT.
5 ON 5 PLAYOFF NOTES
"Week 1 Weeknight Shockers and Thrillers": In the close game "thriller" category, the last second victory by Emprye over the Wolves in the 5 on 5 B division ranks at the top of the list. They won by 1 point by converting their extra point after tying the game in the closing seconds. In the 5 on 5 A division, Sensory Sweep won a thriller over H-Town in the first round by stopping H-Town inside the red zone in the closing seconds. In the 8 on 8 format there were 2 close games during the week. Back To Basics beat UBDU 13 to 7 in a very physical and hotly contested game in the B division and Happy Hour held on to beat Hot round by 7 in the C division. Saturday should product a slew of other close games.
"Week 1 Saturday Upsets": There were only 2 close games on Saturday in the 5 on 5 format and they were both in the C division and won by the same team, the Avengers. In their first game the #9 seed Avengers shocked 4 Play by beating them 22 to 19 with only 4 players all game. In the second game their 5th guy showed up half way through the first half, but they were playing the #1 seed One Step Closer, who was heavily favored and not only did the Avengers stay with them while they were waiting for their 5th guy but they actually led 21 to 12 when he showed up. Unfortunately for One Step Closer, with the score 21 to 18 they lost one of their best players to a twisted knee and they had to play with 4 guys the rest of the way. The Avengers took advantage of OSC's misfortune and continued to play great and won the game 34 to 25. The Avengers have been known in the past to turn it on in the playoffs and they did it again this season.
"Week 2 Crowning of the Champs": In a game that was even closer than the score, the #2 seed Panthers beat the #1 seed Sweet As 44 to 34 in the A division Championship. Not only is it the 6th time the Panthers have won the A division title, but it's also the 6th time that AJ Busch has been named the league MVP. In the A division the Red Devils rolled through all their opponents in the playoffs. Whiskey Wideout was the runner-up after they upset the #1 seed Rumble in the Semi-Finals. In the C division, the Avengers continued their string of upsets by beating the #4 seed That's What She Said and almost beat the #3 seed Ocho, but ended up losing by 1 point to them in the Championship. The Avengers led most of the way but in the end the game was decided by converted or failed extra points.

Playoff News-
Congratuations to the 8 on 8 Format Champions-
A Division- UV United defeated Platinum Hornets
B Division- Trouble defeated Trigenix
C Division- White Rose Propane defeated Warriors
NOTES: A Division- UV United was certainly no surprise in winning the most prestigious division, but the way they won it was definitely surprising. It took a last second hail mary to beat the Hornets on the last play of the game. Hornets QB JD Fountaine let the Hornets from behind to take the lead 18 to 13 with less than 2 minutes to play. UV United drove down to the red zone and Aaron Boone caught an amazing hail mary reception in the end zone to win the game in the most dramatic of fashions for UV. Boone was named the league MVP for his many incredible receptions throughout the season and playoffs.
B Division-
The B division usually has several suprise teams do well in the playoffs and this year was no different. Tenth seeded Trouble ended up beating the #7, #2, #3 and the #9 seeds to win the division (also in dramatic fashion). Ninth seeded Trigenix was also a surprise, beating the #8, #1, and #4 seeds in route to the championship. In the championship game, Trigenix took a 12 to 6 lead with less than 3 minutes to play. Their defense was stellar all game. Trouble had only scored on their first drive and Trigenix had stopped them since, but they failed to stop them on Trouble's last drive. Sammy Miller ran for a 1 yard TD to tie the game and then Jerome Wright caught the extra point to win the game.
C Division-
The C division had no surprises. The #1 seed White Rose Propane went into the playoffs as the heavy favorite and came away as the champion. They beat the Warriors in a great championship game. All three 8 on 8 championship games came down to the wire. White Rose scored with less than two minutes to play to break a 12 to 12 tie and then held the Warriors on their next drive.

Congratuations to the 5 on 5 Format Champions-
A Division- Big Air defeated Sweet As
B Division- Wolves defeated Ravens
C "Competitive" Division- Bum Fight Crew defeated Sensory Sweep
C "Recreational" Division- Jamaica Me Crazy defeated Lakeside Properties

NOTES: A Division- All four 5 on 5 champions are first time champs. None of them were huge surprises, although the Panthers were expected to win the A division. There were knocked out in very surprising fashion by Sweet As in the Semi's as they only scored 6 points (they lost 22 to 6). Big Air was actually trailing by 5 in the championship with less than a minute to play, but Shawn Madry returned an INT 50 yards for a TD for a surprising 12 point turn around. Instead of being down by 11, they were suddendly up by 1. On the very next play Cody Stoddard intercepted another pass that led to the TD that gave them a 7 point lead and the victory.
B Division-
The Wolves had their best game against the 9th seed Orem Baginias Thursday night. That game came down to the last play and they barely survived to move on. Their games against the 5th seed Whiskey Wideouts and 3rd seed Ravens were never in doubt. The Ravens were out of gas after winning an emotional thriller against the Red Devils in the Semis.
C Division-
No real surprise in either of the C divisions. Jamaica was considered the best team in the Rec division going into the playoffs, even though a tough schedule down the stretch and tie breakers had them as the 4th seed and the only surprise about the Bum Fight Crew winning as the fact that they beat a very good Sensory Sweep team by 18.

2K6 Spring League

SEASON OF STUNNING UPSETS & FANTASTIC FINISHES

The 2006 Spring playoffs wrapped up with some of the most exciting finishes and possibly the most games decided by a few points and in the closing seconds ever in UFA history.

8 on 8- There wasn't a surprise in the 8 on 8 A division. Top seeded Quick 6 defeated 2nd seed Tribe for the second straight season, with Otter and Up In Smoke as the other Semi-Finalists. Certainly no upsets there. While several players could have been chosen, Kenny Johnson deserved the A division's league MVP award for this season for his consistency on both sides of the ball. I would argue that the Hasselhoffs winning the 8 on 8 B division wasn't much of a surprise either, even though they were the 5th seed. All 3 of their regular season losses were by a few points and they went undefeated through the playoffs. The B division MVP could have gone to several players, including DE Bart Chytram, who was a complete animal and menace to all teams they played, QB Doug Smith, or WR/RB Brian Thomas. The B division surprise was that the 6th seeded UBDU worked their way through the loser's bracket and avenged a first round loss to Wesco in the Semi-Finals to make it to the championship before losing to the Hasselhoffs. They knocked off the #1 seed Dragons, then the #2 seed Todd/James Team before eliminating the #3 seed Wesco. The C division championship went to the 4th seed The Clap, who surprised the top seeded Mormonz two weeks in a row (and 3 times this season) and defeated the 2nd seed Bulldogs in the championship game. Their team is comprised of all receivers and proved that speed is more important than size in some divisions. They were adament all year that they didn't care about stats and played like a team of no stars (or perhaps all stars). They are the Edmonton Oilers of the 8 on 8 format.
A Division Champ- Quick 6
B Division Champ- Hasselhoffs
C Division Champ- The Clap

8 on 8- The biggest upsets came from the 5 on 5 divisions. The exception to that was the C division. The top seeded Rumble pretty much destroyed everyone they faced. They didn't lose a game that they played all year. Their big story was that when they were to face the #5 seed Lard A's in the second round, they got stuck in traffic coming from Odgen and showed up 10 minutes late and the Lard A's decided to take the forfeit, making Rumble work their way back through the Loser's bracket. The strategy worked for the Lard A's because they did reach the championship game, but had to face the very team they took the forfeit against and Rumble didn't have traffic delays this time and nearly shut the Lard A's out, although the Lard A's did play a smart game and held Rumble to a season low 28 points. The B division playoffs featured an array of close games throughout the post season. I don't remember ever having so many games decided by a TD or less in one season's playoffs before. Several B teams (Wolves, Red Devils, Old Fat & Lazy, Jags) were eliminated by either a few points or in overtime. The #7 seed Empire had a great run through the Loser's bracket to make it to the Semi-Finals before running into the juggernaut Jags. The #5 seed Total Destruction also had an impressive run. After losing to the Jags in the second round, they made it back to the Semi-Finals and upset the #2 seed Red Devils in a 2 point thriller, in which the Red Devils made it to the 1 foot line on 3rd down late in the game, but they were stopped right there on 4th down. Total Destruction then pulled off an even bigger upset by beating the undefeated Jags in Overtime. It should be noted that their MVP Amjid Afridi pulled off some of the most amazing catches, runs, and moves that I have seen in a long time during their incredible playoff run, and he scored the game winning TD against the Jags. While the B division was amazingly exciting, nothing compared to the shocking developments in the 5 on 5 A division. There were 2 powerhouses that were expected by all to breeze through to the championship. The top two seeds, Panthers and Muddogs. They both did breeze through to the Semi-Finals, but both of them lost by 2 points in shocking fashion. Lunchbox were blessed to even make it to the Semi-Finals because MXC technically knocked them out last Thursday night, but then shocked everyone by forfeiting the game so that Lunchbox could play in the Semi-Finals since MXC knew that they wouldn't be able to field a team on the day of the finals. Lunchbox took advantage of their opportunity and stunned the Muddogs by 2 points. They jumped on the Muddogs early and had a 3 touchdown lead, but the Muddogs came from way behind and led at one point late in the game. Lunchbox then burned most of the remaining clock on their game winning drive and the Muddogs didn't have enough time to re-take the lead. The other Semi-Final game featured the heavily favored Panthers and the Fat Astronauts, who had just beaten the Cheatahs on Thursday night in a 3 point defensive thriller to make it to the Semis. The Panthers had a 10 point lead with 1:30 left but the Astronauts scored on a 2 play drive to cut the lead to 4, but it looked bleak because they only had 1 time-out left and 1:08 to play. The Panthers made them use their last time-out and could have ran the clock out by the QB running around a little and downing it, but they decided to throw the ball and gave the ball back to the Astronauts after 2 incomplete passes on 3rd and 4th down. The Astronauts took advantage of their fortune and scored the game winning TD with 7 seconds to play to shock everyone in a thrilling 2 point victory. As the ref in that game, my heart was even pounding. It was certainly one of the most incredible finishes I had seen in a long time. The Astronauts kept their momentum going and played a nearly flawless game in the championship, beating Lunchbox by 5. Nate Imamura was the season's MVP. He was a big reason for their remarkable run, although Zane Gertsch and Ryan Johnston could also have easily been chosen as MVPs. It was their first title, and had to be perhaps the most gratifying of all the champions this season. They lost their first 4 games of the year and then won their last 4 games of the regular season, including a thrilling upset of the Muddogs, and with the victories over the Panthers and Lunchbox on the final day, they had ended up beating all of the other 7 A division teams at some point. Upsets often happen in the post season, but it's rare for a 6th seed to win a championship and end up beating every other team in their league along the way.
A Division Champ- Fat Astronauts
B Division Champ- Total Destruction
C Division Champ- Rumble
