NEWS FLASH: Panthers QB AJ Busch had one of the most spectacular seasons ever in the history of our league. He broke the record for 5 on 5 Passing Yards in a season and the record for Passing TDs in a season. He also led the league in defensive INTs. He was definitely the league's MVP of the regular season.

SEASON OF STUNNING UPSETS & FANTASTIC FINISHES
The 2006 Spring playoffs wrapped up with some of the most exciting finishes and possibly the most games decided by a few points and in the closing seconds ever in UFA history.

8 on 8- There wasn't a surprise in the 8 on 8 A division. Top seeded Quick 6 defeated 2nd seed Tribe for the second straight season, with Otter and Up In Smoke as the other Semi-Finalists. Certainly no upsets there. While several players could have been chosen, Kenny Johnson deserved the A division's league MVP award for this season for his consistency on both sides of the ball. I would argue that the Hasselhoffs winning the 8 on 8 B division wasn't much of a surprise either, even though they were the 5th seed. All 3 of their regular season losses were by a few points and they went undefeated through the playoffs. The B division MVP could have gone to several players, including DE Bart Chytram, who was a complete animal and menace to all teams they played, QB Doug Smith, or WR/RB Brian Thomas. The B division surprise was that the 6th seeded UBDU worked their way through the loser's bracket and avenged a first round loss to Wesco in the Semi-Finals to make it to the championship before losing to the Hasselhoffs. They knocked off the #1 seed Dragons, then the #2 seed Todd/James Team before eliminating the #3 seed Wesco. The C division championship went to the 4th seed The Clap, who surprised the top seeded Mormonz two weeks in a row (and 3 times this season) and defeated the 2nd seed Bulldogs in the championship game. Their team is comprised of all receivers and proved that speed is more important than size in some divisions. They were adament all year that they didn't care about stats and played like a team of no stars (or perhaps all stars). They are the Edmonton Oilers of the 8 on 8 format.

8 on 8- The biggest upsets came from the 5 on 5 divisions. The exception to that was the C division. The top seeded Rumble pretty much destroyed everyone they faced. They didn't lose a game that they played all year. Their big story was that when they were to face the #5 seed Lard A's in the second round, they got stuck in traffic coming from Odgen and showed up 10 minutes late and the Lard A's decided to take the forfeit, making Rumble work their way back through the Loser's bracket. The strategy worked for the Lard A's because they did reach the championship game, but had to face the very team they took the forfeit against and Rumble didn't have traffic delays this time and nearly shut the Lard A's out, although the Lard A's did play a smart game and held Rumble to a season low 28 points. The B division playoffs featured an array of close games throughout the post season. I don't remember ever having so many games decided by a TD or less in one season's playoffs before. Several B teams (Wolves, Red Devils, Old Fat & Lazy, Jags) were eliminated by either a few points or in overtime. The #7 seed Empire had a great run through the Loser's bracket to make it to the Semi-Finals before running into the juggernaut Jags. The #5 seed Total Destruction also had an impressive run. After losing to the Jags in the second round, they made it back to the Semi-Finals and upset the #2 seed Red Devils in a 2 point thriller, in which the Red Devils made it to the 1 foot line on 3rd down late in the game, but they were stopped right there on 4th down. Total Destruction then pulled off an even bigger upset by beating the undefeated Jags in Overtime. It should be noted that their MVP Amjid Afridi pulled off some of the most amazing catches, runs, and moves that I have seen in a long time during their incredible playoff run, and he scored the game winning TD against the Jags. While the B division was amazingly exciting, nothing compared to the shocking developments in the 5 on 5 A division. There were 2 powerhouses that were expected by all to breeze through to the championship. The top two seeds, Panthers and Muddogs. They both did breeze through to the Semi-Finals, but both of them lost by 2 points in shocking fashion. Lunchbox were blessed to even make it to the Semi-Finals because MXC technically knocked them out last Thursday night, but then shocked everyone by forfeiting the game so that Lunchbox could play in the Semi-Finals since MXC knew that they wouldn't be able to field a team on the day of the finals. Lunchbox took advantage of their opportunity and stunned the Muddogs by 2 points. They jumped on the Muddogs early and had a 3 touchdown lead, but the Muddogs came from way behind and led at one point late in the game. Lunchbox then burned most of the remaining clock on their game winning drive and the Muddogs didn't have enough time to re-take the lead. The other Semi-Final game featured the heavily favored Panthers and the Fat Astronauts, who had just beaten the Cheatahs on Thursday night in a 3 point defensive thriller to make it to the Semis. The Panthers had a 10 point lead with 1:30 left but the Astronauts scored on a 2 play drive to cut the lead to 4, but it looked bleak because they only had 1 time-out left and 1:08 to play. The Panthers made them use their last time-out and could have ran the clock out by the QB running around a little and downing it, but they decided to throw the ball and gave the ball back to the Astronauts after 2 incomplete passes on 3rd and 4th down. The Astronauts took advantage of their fortune and scored the game winning TD with 7 seconds to play to shock everyone in a thrilling 2 point victory. As the ref in that game, my heart was even pounding. It was certainly one of the most incredible finishes I had seen in a long time. The Astronauts kept their momentum going and played a nearly flawless game in the championship, beating Lunchbox by 5. Nate Imamura was the season's MVP. He was a big reason for their remarkable run, although Zane Gertsch and Ryan Johnston could also have easily been chosen as MVPs. It was their first title, and had to be perhaps the most gratifying of all the champions this season. They lost their first 4 games of the year and then won their last 4 games of the regular season, including a thrilling upset of the Muddogs, and with the victories over the Panthers and Lunchbox on the final day, they had ended up beating all of the other 7 A division teams at some point. Upsets often happen in the post season, but it's rare for a 6th seed to win a championship and end up beating every other team in their league along the way.

NEWS FLASH- The Return of the Champions!!!
This was the year for past champions to return to elite status. Almost all the teams in the finals this year were past champions (some of them under different names from past years). Quick 6, Tribe, Fighting Green Hornets, Couches, Blaze, Panthers, Quick 6 (5 on 5), Lunchbox, Blueball, and Sugarloaf have all won a division in the past. Only Debry's and Jose Canseco were in the finals for the first time and Debry's were the only first time winner. Both Quick 6 (8 on 8 team) and the Panthers returned to the top of the league after several seasons of falling short.

• The 5 on 5 playoffs began on Tuesday night with two classic games that both came down to the last play. The A division saw the league's biggest rivals square off in the second round. The Muddogs beat Primetime and the Panthers beat Air Terror to set up another classic match-up between the two powerhouse teams. The defending champion Muddogs avenged a loss to the Panthers earlier in the season by squeaking out a one point victory in a game that was decided in the final seconds. On the other field the C division had another classic decided in the last seconds between the 4th and 5th seeds. The Isotopes led Rumble the entire game, but made some fatal clock management errors in the final minute and Rumble had a chance to win with the ball on the 15 yard line with 13 seconds left, trailing by 4 points. The ball was caught at the 1 yard line but the flag was pulled immediately before the ball could be reached acrossed the end zone and the time expired before they could get back to the line since they had no time outs left. It was reminescent to the Rams/Titans Super Bowl a few years back where Kevin Dyson was stopped a half yard shy on the final play. This game was exactly how a 4 vs 5 seed should be.
• Quick 6 dominated the first night of the 8 on 8 playoffs, beating Demolition and Invictus to make it to the Semi-Finals. Invictus beat Big Toe and Anixter beat the firemen team Black Fire in the other games of the night.
• Thursday night resulted in the first upsets of the post season and the best game so far this season. The Madcaps, who were the 7th seed in the 5 on 5 C division, upset Uncle Rico's Allstars in a game that was heavily influenced by wind. Also, Team Shirk, the 12th seed in the 8 on 8 B division, upset Blaze, the 5th seed, in what was called the best game of the year so far as it was decided in 3 overtimes as darkness began to set in. Also in the 8 on 8 B division, the 7th seeded Gamecocks beat the #2 seed Cavemen.
• Saturday morning began with two incredible A division 8 on 8 games. On one field the Philights led 12 to 7 with less than a minute to play when How U Want It scored on a long pass to take the lead and eventually the game. On the other field Wolfpack had a chance at pulling off an upset against the top seeded Otter as they led 19 to 14 with about 2 minutes to play, but a late interception in the redzone gave Otter and chance and they drove the length of the field to win the game. How U Want It then beat Otter to make it to the Semi-Finals. The 8 on 8 B division continued it's string of upsets. The #14 (Pigsking Pimps), #8 (Up In Smoke), #7 (Gamecocks) and #12 (Team Shirk) seeds are all still in the winner's bracket, while all the top seeds are in the loser's bracket and the #3 seed, Vikings are already out. No huge surprises in the 5 on 5 division on Saturday. The Rhinos reached the Semi-Finals in the A division as expected. The Bandits, Foo Foo Chaos, Highlanders, and MXC are the B division teams still in the winner's bracket, and the Star Dogs and Lunchbox advanced in the C division.
• Avengers won a thriller on Tuesday night to advance in the 5 on 5 B division, at the same time knocking out the Renegades.
• On Wednesday night the 8 on 8 A division continued with the string of close games with Wolfpack beating the Philights by one after the Philights failed to convert the game winning try for extra point, Demolition beating Big Toe by a touchdown, and Invictus knocking off Wolfpack, again by a touchdown. The Otter, Demolition game was even closer than the 21 to 12 score. This sets up the final four with quite possibly the tightest group of 4 teams in this division since the mid 90's when Aw Hell, Black In Black, the Falcons, TNP, and the Gators made up the top of the division for several years. Also on Wednesday night Unlce Rico's Allstars won 2 games to stay alive in the 5 on 5 C division along with Rumble, who also advanced. They will play Isotopes and Star Dogs, respectively, while Luncbox and the Madcaps await the winners.
• On Thursday the 8 on 8 B Division continued with the suprises as the #2, 4, and 5 seeds all were knocked out. The #1 seed Couches prevailed and are still alive in the loser's bracket, but after them the next highest seed left is the #6 seed Pass the Doughnut. Also on Thursday night there were a couple of great comebacks by 5 on 5 teams. El Diablos came back from a 33 to 14 deficit with less than 10 minutes to play to win 40 to 39 over Primetime in the A division and Empyre made a valiant comeback in the B division but fell short by 2 points to the #2 seed KGB. The 5 on 5 A division is down to 5 teams remaining. One Semi-Final is set, Muddogs vs. El Diablos, while the Rhinos await the winner of Panthers and Sugar House Ballers. The B division still has 8 teams remaining.
• Saturday morning began with a game for ages in the 5 on 5 A division. The Rhinos and Panthers went to Overtime where the Rhinos wom by converting their extra point. Then they went on to rout the Muddogs to capture their first title. In the 8 on 8 B division Up In Smoke, Gamecocks, Team Shirk, and the Couches advanced to the Semi-Finals. They all did so in convincing fashion except for the Gamecocks who barely held on to beat Pigskin Pimps with a dramatic goalline stand on the one yard line. Lunchbox breezed through the 5 on 5 C division. They didn't even have a close game throughout the playoffs. The Madcaps were the surprise team, making it all the way to the finals before running into the juggernaut. The 8 on 8 A division ended with more unbelievable games. Most of the A division playoff games have been close and Saturday's games were even more spectacular than the rest. First, in the Semi-Finals Otter jumped to a quick 14 point lead over Quick 6 but that didn't last as Quick 6 battled back to take the lead with less than a minute to play. After a few short passes Otter had the ball on about their own 40 yard line with 25 seconds to play and their chances of repeating as champions looked bleak. Spencer Morris stepped up in the pocket and heaved a bomb down the right sideline and Matt Fankhouser ran by his defender and caught the ball for a dramatic 60 yard, game winning TD. It was one of the best games of the year. Not to be outdone, the finals betweem Otter and Invictus was every bit as exciting. It was a very hard fought game in the trenches, but Otter dominated most of the game. They had a 12 to 0 lead with 2 minutes to play in the game. Invictus scored on the next play to cut the lead to 12 to 7. Then they held Otter to a 3 and out to get the ball back for a final shot. Lance Rice drove his team down to the red zone and trew the game winning TD with less than 30 seconds to play to snatch the victory in a dramatic turn of events. It was also their first title. The 5 on 5 B division ended the day with a few more incredible games. KGB won an absolute thriller against the Red Devils in a game that saw 4 lead changes in the final 2 minutes and the Bandits beat Foo Foo Chaos on the last play of the game. The Highlanders also won a see saw battle against the Avengers who lost a heart breaker by getting stopped at the 1 yard line on the final play, another game reminescent of the Rams/Titans Superbowl. MXC joined those 3 teams to round out the final four in that division.
• MXC continued their dominance by beating KGB and the Highlanders to win the 5 on 5 B division. The Highlanders upset the #1 seed Bandits in the Semi-Finals to reach the finals for their 3rd or 4th time, but they are yet to be able to win the big game. The 8 on 8 B division ended on somewhat of a sour note. Up In Smoke won a great game against the Couches and the Gamecocks beat Team Shirk handily in the Semi-Finals. At the end of the Championship game hot heads got the best of both teams and the game was called due to a bench clearing brawl and it was decided that neither team should get a victory since the refs had warned both teams prior to the brawl and it still escalated. "How can you end without a champion?" Well, the brawl should have never happened in the first place and even after there was a retaliation, it could have ended right there with a few people getting kicked out and the game being finished, but both teams decided in the heat of the moment to rush onto the field and 'all hell broke loose'. For the record, the Gamecocks were winning by 8 points, 20 to 12 with less than a minute to play, but Up in Smoke were driving and were about 20 yards aways from possibly scoring to have a chance to tie the game. In retrospect I am actually really proud of both teams because at least 90% of the players were pulling people off trying to stop the fight and it ended really quickly. It definitely could have been alot worse than it was and both teams were very respectful and understanding after the game. It is a hard question to answer as to how players are to avoid letting the heat of the moment get the best of them and to not rush in to defend their teammates. I don't know how to answer that question except that I really am proud of both teams for ending the brawl as quickly as they did, but since both teams had been warned (not that a warning should even be necessary) and the brawl shouldn't have happened in the first place I stand behind the refs decision to call the game and declare no winner. Both teams will be allowed to continue in the B division in the fall, so perhaps we can have a re-match and decide a winner the appropriate way.
• Due to certain occurances the past few seasons it might be time to make some policy changes. I have refrained from forcing teams to buy uniforms and sign rosters because I didn't want to increase the cost for teams to play. It might be time to do that. It would make the league look a whole lot better, it would help to ensure that teams are following roster rules, it would ensure that all players sign a waiver so that they understand the sportsmanship policy, and it would help to prevent a few problems. We have even talked about going back to keeping stats by forcing every team to have uniforms with numbers and have a set roster where every player wears the same number each week. Uniforms don't have to be expensive. You can make uniforms with basic T-Shirts and iron on numbers for about $5 a shirt. We have a person who plays inthe league who does screeen printing for a very reasonable price and there are several other places to get uniforms. We'll keep you posted on what we decide.

Congratulations to the Muddogs who won both Spring tournaments. They beat Sundance Homes to claim the championship in the indoor tournament and they beat the Bandits in the finals of the outdoor tournament.
