UFA 2007 Fall League Information
POST SCRIPT: I'm very proud to announce that this past Spring season we had a record number of teams. We had 70 teams between the two formats. It was the first time we broke the 65 team barrier. Thank you to all for your participation. It really made the league great.
INTRODUCTION: The upcoming flag football season is approaching quickly and the Utah Football Association has finalized the particulars. For those of you who are new to the league this is an independent, adult flag football league in Salt Lake City. We have two formats, 8 on 8 & 5 on 5, and several levels of competition in each format. The fact that we are independent from any county or city means that we are not restricted to typical ridiculous flag football rules. Our rules are designed to be as close to regular football as possible (especially the 8 on 8 format) without the risk of serious injuries. Our independence also means that we are not constricted to a 'normal' schedule. Games are played on Saturdays and weeknights (Tues, Wed, Thurs nights). Our divisions or leagues are formed based upon competitive level instead of your preference for what day you play on. We try to adhere to team's scheduling preferences while trying to make sure they play within their level of competition as much as possible (there are sometimes games scheduled between different levels due to scheduling preferences). Much of the season is scheduled week to week to help us adhere to last minute scheduling conflicts. This also allows teams that don't hear about the league until after we begin to still participate. It also allows the league to make sure we have solid teams and reduce the chance of forfeits. All Teams are guaranteed 10 regular season games plus playoffs in each format (the only exception is if a team forfeits too many games without proper notification, that team won't be invited to play in the post season.) This sport is a lot of fun and the league is committed to making it a good experience for all participants. For all the new teams, the league has a very strict sportsmanship policy to prevent legal problems and injuries. Team captains are responsible for informing all players of all rules and policies. We want this league to be fun for everyone and we don't want it to be a bad experience for anyone because of sportsmanship problems.
LEAGUE OVERVIEW: We will begin the week of Tuesday, Sept 4 and end on Nov 17 (the week before Thanksgiving). The actual cutoff date for adding a team will be Saturday, September 18. There will be 10 regular season games plus playoffs. The playoffs will be SINGLE ELIMINATION (as voted on by the league).
LOCATIONS: We will be playing all Saturday league games at West Jordan Middle School (7550 S. Redwood Road) again this year. Weeknight games will also be played at the school before it gets dark until mid-October, at which time weeknight games will be played under the lights in Sandy at Bicentennial Park (8680 South, 500 East). It will be clearly posted on the Schedule page when that change occurs. Remember, ALL Saturday games are at West Jordan Middle School.
FORMATS:
As mentioned earlier, there are two formats, 8 on
8 & 5 on 5. 8 on 8 is more like real football. Running plays, kicking, and
blocking are allowed and the strategy involved is more similar to real football.
The blocking that is allowed resembles 'pass blocking' in real football.
You cannot use shoulders, fore-arms, chop blocks, etc., but you are allowed
to 'push' block with arms and hands extended. 8 on 8 is played on a full
size football field with first down cones at every 20 yard interval. There
will be 3 levels of competition in each format in the spring. The "A Division"
is for the most competitive teams. The "B Division" is for teams that are
not quite as competitive as the A Division teams and the "C Division"
is for teams that are just out there to have fun. 5 on 5, on the other hand,
is a faster paced, higher scoring game. There are no running plays (all
plays must include a forward pass), and no blocking. Punting is allowed,
but there are no kickoffs. The field is 50 yard long (plus 8 to 10 yard
end zones) and 32 yards wide. There is one first down, at midfield.
NEW
POLICYS:
1)
We have discussed numerous different options for preventing forfeits where
the team does not give us ample notification that they won't have enough
player to field a team on a particular day. We are usually able to ask a
team that plays before or after to fill in for the team, if they do give
us at least 48 hours notification that they will have to forfeit. In that
case there isn't a problem because the other team still gets to play. The
problem arises when a team shows up and doesn't get to play. That is what
we have to try to avoid. This year we are going to strictly enforce the
rule where a team will not be allowed to play in the post season if they
have more than 2 forfeits. Hopefully this in itself will solve the problem.
I will also do my best to get any team that doesn't get to play due to a
forfeit another game at some point. This, of course, becomes a problem at
the end of the season. Therefore, here is the rest of the new policy: IF
A TEAM FORFEITS WITHOUT AT LEAST A 48 HOUR NOTIFICATION AND I AM NOT ABLE
TO GET THE OTHER TEAM ANOTHER GAME IN ITS PLACE, THE FORFEITING TEAM MUST
PAY $30 BEFORE BEING ALLOWED TO PLAY IN THE PLAYOFFS AND THAT MONEY WILL
GO STRAIGHT TO THE TEAM THAT DIDN'T GET TO PLAY. NOW,
PLEASE UNDERSTAND, THAT IF THE TEAM DOESN'T END UP PLAYING IN THE PLAYOFFS
DUE TO HAVING TOO MANY FORFEITS OR NOT PAYING THE FEE, THEN WE OBVIOUSLY
CAN'T GIVE THE OTHER TEAM THE MONEY, BUT AGAIN, HOPEFULLY THIS POLICY WILL
PREVENT THESE TYPES OF ISSUES. ALSO, REMEMBER, THIS
IS ONLY FOR FORFEITS WHERE THERE IS NOT AT LEAST 48 HOURS OF NOTIFICATION.
I WILL LET YOU KNOW IN ADVANCE IF I AM NOT ABLE TO FIND ANOTHER TEAM TO
PLAY IN THE FORFEITING TEAM'S PLACE SO THAT YOUR TEAM DOESN'T SHOW UP FOR
NOTHING (THAT IS THE BIGGEST ISSUE). PLEASE UNDERSTAND
THAT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE HAVE TRIED THIS, SO IT'S GOING TO BE A LEARNING
EXPERIENCE FOR ALL OF US. I AM HOPING THAT IT SIMPLY REDUCES OR ELIMINATES
LATE SEASON FORFEITS.
2) Also, effective this season, there will be a new policy in regards to the number of A division players being allowed to play on B or C teams. My thoughts are: 8 on 8 B division teams can have no more than 3 A division players; 8 on 8 C teams can have 1 A division player; 5 on 5 B teams can have no more than 2 A division players; 5 on 5 C teams can have 1 A division player. Note: An A division player is defined as any player who also plays on an A division team in either format. Of course all players are welcome to play in multiple formats and divisions, as long as the team follow this new policy of not having more than max # of A division players.
1)
All teams must wear matching jerseys/shirts 2)
ALL players must sign a Sportsmanship Policy/Waiver, which will also be
used as a Team Roster. Saturday, June 2 will be the last day that you can
add players to your roster. The roster will be frozen at that point.
